The biggest challenge lies in the fact that acoustics don’t always provide an intuitive solution to every problem. It’s possible to think you’ve resolved one issue, while inadvertently creating another. So, how can you effectively manage a room with poor acoustics?
The right answer? Hire a professional acoustician.
“But sometimes we can’t always hire a professional, so what do you do then?”
Well, there are a few things you can do to minimize acoustic problems.
First off, let me clarify that without building out a full studio, there will be no such thing as “perfect” acoustics with a temporary or DIY solution. However, there are some key principles to understand that can help.
Room Acoustics 101: Reflection, Absorption, and Diffusion
Room acoustics is simply how sound behaves inside a space. The same speaker or voice can sound clear in one room and muddy or harsh in another—not because the source changed, but because the room is adding (and removing) sound in ways you don’t intend. The three key ideas that solve “why does this room sound like that?” are reflection, absorption, and diffusion.
Reflection: the room “replays” your sound
When sound hits a surface and bounces back, that’s reflection. Hard, flat surfaces (drywall, glass, concrete, wood floors) reflect. Reflections arrive at your ears (and microphone) slightly after the direct sound, and that can cause:
- Flutter echo (ping-ping between parallel walls)
- Harshness (too much high-frequency bounce)
- Comb filtering (phasey sound, weird tonal dips/peaks, smeared clarity)
- Poor imaging in speakers (stereo feels unfocused)
Reflections aren’t always bad—rooms need some life—but uncontrolled early reflections are a common reason things sound unclear.
Absorption: turning sound energy into “less sound”
Absorption reduces reflections by soaking up some of the sound energy (mostly through porous materials like fiberglass, mineral wool, thick fabric, carpets—when thick enough). Absorption helps by:
- Lowering reverb/decay time (less “roomy”)
- Reducing harsh highs (if placed at reflection points)
- Tightening clarity for speech and vocals
Important note: thin foam mainly affects highs. If your room is boomy or muddy, you usually need thicker absorption and corner treatment (bass builds up in corners).
Diffusion: scattering reflections so they’re less destructive
Diffusion doesn’t remove much sound—it spreads reflections out in many directions. Instead of one strong bounce that causes obvious slap or phase issues, diffusion creates many smaller reflections that feel smoother and more natural. It’s useful for:
- Keeping a room from feeling “dead”
- Improving spaciousness without obvious echo
- Smoothing rear-wall energy in mix rooms or control rooms
Diffusion usually works better when you’re not sitting right on top of it (some distance helps the scatter blend).

Here are quick, high-impact moves that don’t require advanced tools:
1) Find and treat your first reflection points
For speakers or a desk setup: sit where you listen, then identify where sound from each speaker hits the side walls/ceiling first. A simple trick is the “mirror method” (have someone move a mirror along the wall; where you can see a speaker in the mirror is a reflection point). Put something soft/thick there:
- Thick blanket/duvet temporarily
- A bookshelf packed with uneven items (better than bare wall)
- Ideally: a 2–4” panel (thicker is better)
2) Stop flutter echo fast
If you clap and hear a “zing” or “ping,” you’ve got flutter between parallel surfaces. Quick fixes:
- Add a rug
- Hang curtains
- Put a couch or thick chair against one wall
- Break up one of the surfaces with furniture or shelving
3) Control the corners (biggest “mud” fix)
If the room sounds boomy, corners are the first place to help:
- Move a soft, thick item into a corner (temporarily)
- Add as much thickness as you can manage (even stacked cushions can help)
- Long-term: corner bass traps are the real solution
4) Move the speakers and your position before buying anything
Small movements can make a huge difference:
- Don’t sit exactly in the center of the room
- Keep speakers away from corners if possible
- Try moving the listening position forward/back in small steps and listen for tighter bass
5) Use diffusion only when you’ve tamed the worst reflections
If your room starts feeling too dead after adding absorption, diffusion can bring “space” back:
- Bookcases with uneven depths can act like basic diffusion
- Rear wall diffusion is often more helpful than front wall diffusion in small rooms
